Female Bodybuilding’s long history has not only given us great women in the sport, but also a chance to look back and say “Oooh, what was she thinking.” Just remember, today’s fashion is tomorrow’s bad hair day.

Tina Zampa Spotlight

Tina Zampa
I was born on August 10 in Rhode Island and lived there until 1990. I then moved to southern California and have since made California my home. I have been working as a legal assistant since 1986. I've worked in all areas of the law and find it both challenging and rewarding.

While growing up, I was never involved in any sports activities in school. However, I did take ballet lessons for a short period of time. When I turned 19, I joined a gym just to tone. It wasn't until I moved to Southern California and met Jayne Trcka in 1997 when I became serious about the sport. I started to see changes in my body almost immediately. Other people saw changes in me as well and began asking if I ever considered competing. I was extremely shy (still am) and didn't even want to think about it – couldn't even imagine it. But Jayne encouraged me and I did it anyway. I enjoyed the whole experience (preparing for the competition, being on stage, meeting the other competitors) so much that I couldn't wait for the next one. Bodybuilding has actually made me become more focused and disciplined.

Besides training, I really don't have any hobbies. I like football and soccer and enjoy spending time with my family and pets. I'm a huge animal lover. One thing that I would absolutely love to do is interact with tigers – Bengal tigers. Ever since I was a little girl, I always wanted to hug a tiger. There's just something about the BIG cats that appeals to me.

Turkey Shoot

Tiffany Rabon
In honor of Thanksgiving, I like to take one of my "Turkeys" out of the AO Vault to share. These are morphs that just didn't make the cut.

This year's feast is Tiffany Rabon done in August 2009. I got halfway done, didn't like how it was looking and scrapped the project in mid forearm. Hope you enjoy and Happy Thanksgiving

Bye Bye Dayna

None of my work is ever meant to defame, insult or make fun of the women I depict and admire. In fact I feel it's a badge of honor. So when models come after and threaten to sue, I take it very seriously. It's times like these I want to give up completely. Fitness Models have always been the only ones to react that way and am working to remove them from any future Area Orion experiments.

Hence, Sample388AA0312 bites the dust and we add another AO hater to the list; Amy Peters, Pauline Nordin, Samantha Baker, Kristen Frahn, Carmen Garcia... and Dayna Maleton

Strong Women in History: Athleta

Athleta
Athleta Van Huffelen was born in 1868, in Anvers, Belgium to a long line of athletes (and would later prove her name a fitting choice). In 1886 at only 18, Athleta started her weightlifting spectacles at the "Eden Alhambra" theater in Brussels. She would dance with three men on the shoulders or carry a heavy bar on her shoulders with four suspended men. After her initial success, Athleta traveled to England and later all over Europe and America holding exhibitions of her physical power.

Continuing in the business, Athleta and her daughters Brada, Louise and Anna performed together in spectacles demonstrating physical strength. In 1905, Athleta left the world of spectacles and lived in a country chalet (called "Village Athleta") along with her husband and family near Anvers, Belgium. The three daughters continued performing at the famous Parisian nightclub "Folies Bergere" but never reached the glory their mother had obtained.

Aleesha Young Spotlight

Aleesha Young
I was born in Salt Lake City on Nov 10th 1984. I started to developed muscle at a very early age. By age 5, boys were teasing me about my biceps. I come from a very athletic family and was always supported and encouraged by my parents. My lil brother (14) plays football and Ice Hockey. My sister (21) plays Hockey for Nickols Boston College. They inspire me to be the best that I can be.

I excelled at Softball and Cheerleading and received a College Scholarship. I tried my hand at basketball and soccer but was a bit too aggressive for these sports.

During High School I was approached by the coach to train in the gym with the football team, to motivate them to work harder. I always wanted to be a petite girl and did not enjoy being muscular, in fact I despised it to the point that I became vegetarian and started running many miles a day just to lose muscle.

This strategy obviously did not work and I made a conscious effort to embrace and accept my body. At age 15 I began training with my Dad at the gym and within one year I could squat 405 lbs. My Dad competed for many years in Bodybuilding and encouraged me to follow in his footsteps.

It was not until I turned 23 that I did my first Bodybuilding show. I won the UTAH State overall. While preparing for my first National show I suffered a spiral fracture in my right humerus. The following year I competed in the USA’s placing 7th in the heavyweight division.

After taking a year off and going through many changes in my life, I was ready to enjoy competing again. I recently won the All South overall championship, thereby qualifying to compete Nationally next year (2011). I hope to achieve my goal of becoming a professional body builder and am excited to see what the future holds.
